Section 7: New Directions in IDT
For the first part of our reading I was really interested in learning objects as well as how to use rich media effectively. To assist in helping learners foster I plan to use many learning objects in the classroom by effectively implementing them in a step-by-step manner to accommodate diverse learners in each classroom setting. It can be stressful when trying to accommodate different learning styles, which is where learning objects will give me more flexibility in reaching learners styles by providing virtual world, simulation, videos, interactive quizzes, charts, graphs and more to engage them. Rich media will assist me in facilitating the natural process of learning in each learner. I will certainly take into account the different memory systems and channels of processing when preparing rich media and learning objects for the classrooms as well. Also, I plan to provide an appropriate amount of visuals that will provide learners more than one opportunity to build meaning on the knowledge being given. Traditional instruction is always needed, but to take learning to another level and accommodate today’s learners I feel that learning objects and rich media will not only motivate learners, but will also encourage learners to make connections. By giving students a variety of ways to feel confident, motivated, independent, a sense of mastery, self-determination, self-efficiency, like they are part of a group, and the enjoyment of social interaction and sense of community, the information and knowledge presented to them will provide them the best learning experience. Implementing learning objects and rich media appropriately into the curriculum of my school is priority, and I plan to begin immediately. I feel that the most challenging part of implementing these technologies will be having to find them at a reasonable cost, and actually finding the right ones that will reach every learner. I hope to gain team leaders that will assist me in finding the appropriate learning objects and rich media to alleviate the challenge and to help the classrooms begin sooner than expected in implementing these technologies.
Using technology in the classroom will always provide the potential for ethical issues. When referring to the technologies as mentioned previously, to avoid ethical issues in regards to diversity, it is extremely important to design the knowledge in such a way that it does not place any negative stereotypes in regards to culture, gender, etc. Each individual must be carefully considered for the use of the technology being provided. I feel that the technologies I have chosen will certainly enhance accessibility and accommodate diverse learning needs due to their flexibility and ability to be customized to fit each individual’s needs. Using the technology will give me the ability to assess each individual’s needs as well as group needs, enabling me to make any changes necessary to design the instruction or learning more effectively. Feedback is going to be extremely helpful in making instruction or learning with the technology more effective as well, since it gives even the quietest learners a voice. I do feel that guidance with the technology is a MUST. Each technology must be used appropriately, following very specific guidelines and understanding of the learning styles and processes of individual learners. In the end, although time consuming, the technologies will not be efficient and effective if proper guidance is not given.
